The Story of Mercedes Benz

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

Mercedes Benz can trace its origins to the beginning of the motor car itself, with Karl Benz’s Patent Motorwagen of 1886.

The first production car bearing the name Benz was the 1894 Velo, which ran in the first ever car race on record, between Paris and Rouen. Gottlieb Daimler was also building motor cars at the same time, and both companies saw the marketing potential of the embryonic sport of motor racing. Very early on, Mercedes-Daimler had the upper hand, but from 1908, Benz began to compete on more equal terms.

World War One inevitably meant arms production for both companies, but cars were soon back on the agenda post 1918. Post War Germany suffered violent turmoil politically and economically for several years. The conditions eventually lead to a marriage of necessity between Mercedes Daimler and Benz in 1926.

The ruthless Nazi regime of 1933 did bring order, and German industry began to thrive once more. Mercedes Benz produced some amazing supercharged racers in the 1930s a technology which was ultimately applied in WW2 aero engines.

With the cessation of hostilities in 1945, Used Mercedes for Sale Benz wasted no time in returning to car production. Just a decade later the company was in winning form in sales and on the race track, helped along by motorsport legends Fangio and Stirling Moss. !955 was what you might call a good year for Mercedes Benz: they won the International Grand Prix, the Sports Car World Championship and World Rally Series.
